The book Mac OS 8 Revealed by Tony Francis will introduce you to the technical architecture of the Mac OS 8 operating system. This folder contains a preliminary electronic version of the Table of Contents, Preface, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2 of Mac OS 8 Revealed, as well as animated demos for Figures 1.3 and 1.6, to give you a flavor of the book.
To view these chapters on your computer, you'll need to
* install Adobe[tm] Acrobat[tm] Reader 2.1 if you don't already have it installed (Acrobat
Reader 2.1 is available elsewhere on this Conference CD)
* double-click the file named Sample Chapters to open a preliminary version of the
Table of Contents, Preface, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2 of Mac OS 8 Revealed
To see the animated demo version of Figure 1.3 (on page 5 of Chapter 1) or Figure 1.6 (on page 8 of Chapter 1), move the cursor anywhere on either figure and click the mouse button.
The final version of the book will be published by Apple Press and Addison-Wesley Longman in July. Accompanying the printed book will be a CD-ROM containing electronic versions of all printed chapters as well as movie demonstrations for many of the book's screen shots.

System Requirements for Viewing the Sample Chapters
To read the sample chapters from Mac OS 8 Revealed and view the movie demos, you'll need the following equipment:
* A Mac OS-compatible computer with a 68020 (Macintosh II series) or faster
processor
* Macintosh System 7.0 or later
* a CD-ROM drive
* 4 MB of hard disk space (to install Adobe Acrobat Reader)
If you're using a Power Macintosh computer, or if Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is not already installed on your computer, you'll need a minimum of 5 MB of available RAM to open the Sample Chapters file and simultaneously run a movie demo. If you're using a non-Power Macintosh computer that already has ATM installed, you'll need at least
4 MB of available RAM.
Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader
To view, print, and navigate through these sample chapters from Mac OS 8 Revealed, you must first install Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. For installation instructions, as well as information about ATM versions, font installation, and using Acrobat Reader with QuickDraw GX, see the file ReadMe-Reader 2.1 in the Adobe Acrobat folder on this CD.
Using the Electronic Book to Find and View Movies
This CD-ROM provides movie demonstrations of two of the book's screen shots:
Figure 1.3 on page 5 and Figure 1.6 on page 8, both in Chapter 1. In the final version of this product, all figures identified by a film strip in the left page margin will have associated movie demos.
Once you have installed Acrobat Reader, double-click the file titled Sample Chapters located in the Mac OS 8 Revealed folder. To run a movie demo, go to the page 5 or 8 in Chapter 1. (You can navigate through the book by clicking several kinds of arrow buttons in the tool bar at the top of the screen, by using commands in the View menu, or by using the window scroll bars.) When you find Figure 1.3 or 1.6, click anywhere in the figure to run the demo.
These demos are entirely self-running; you don't need to start up any other software. When a movie finishes, it disappears from your screen, returning you to the page in the electronic book containing the screen shot.
Viewing and Printing the Electronic Book
You can read and print text and screen shots from the electronic version of Mac OS 8 Revealed.
Using bookmarks. This electronic book has been built with bookmarks. Bookmarks provide a navigable table of contents for the entire document. The bookmark window is displayed to the left of the document's text. If this window is not showing, choose the Bookmarks and Page command (or Command-7) from the View window to display it. You can expand and collapse the triangle controls to view the document contents; click any heading in the Bookmarks window to go directly to that page. Choose Page Only (Command-6) to hide the Bookmarks window. You can also quickly toggle between Page Only and Bookmarks and Page view by clicking the leftmost icon in the tool bar (for Page Only) and the icon immediately to its right (for Bookmarks and Page).
Changing magnification. The Sample Chapters file opens by default at 100%, but the file is viewed best at 150%. You can change the magnification in various ways, and you can also display thumbnail views to accompany the page you are viewing. You can use the preferences command in the File menu to change the default magnification (as well as other settings) that the file uses when first opened.
Viewing screen-shot graphics. Screen-shot graphics may not display well at 100% (although they will print correctly). Viewing at a higher magnification (such as 200%) should help solve the problem.
The screen shot graphics were prepared for display on color monitors with 256 colors. For best results, display the electronic book on a color monitor, and use the Monitors color panel to set the number of colors to 256.
Printing. If you want to print parts of the file, and QuickDraw GX is enabled, you must turn on desktop printing.
If you need more information about working in Acrobat Reader, see the Acrobat Reader Guide, which provides online help for using the Reader.
